Outstanding Alumni

Over the years, the department and school have made significant contributions in basic and applied researches in atmospheric sciences, and made key scientific and technological achievements in the field for national economic and social development and for national defense. Meanwhile, the program has trained more than 7,000 meteorological professionals, producing many professors, researchers, and outstanding operational weather forecasters. Among them are 13 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. The atmospheric science program at NJU has been a key supplier of advanced-level research and operational meteorologists to the country.

Shiyan Tao (陶诗言)

Tao was an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, acting director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of CAS, and chairperson (later, honorary chairperson) of Chinese Meteorology Society. He was a famous Chinese meteorologist and one of the founders of China's modern meteorology. He graduated from the Geography Department of National Central University (the predecessor of Nanjing University) at 1942. In 1980, in recognition of his achievements, Tao was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Youxi Gao (高由禧)

Gao served as director (later, honorary director) of Lanzhou Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a professor at Sun Yat-sen University. Gao is a great meteorologist, who made a valuable contribution to the studies of monsoon, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau meteorological features and China's meteorology. He graduated from the Geography Department of National Central University (the predecessor of Nanjing University) at 1944. In 1980, in recognition of his achievements, Gao was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Jiping Chao (巢纪平)

Chao was the honorary director of National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center. He has been focusing on the research of numerical weather prediction, mesoscale atmospheric dynamics, cumulus dynamics, atmospheric dynamics of tropic area, tropic ocean-atmosphere interaction, and numerical prediction of marine environment, and made considerable achievements. He graduated from the Meteorology Department of Nanjing University at 1954. In 1995, in recognition of his achievements, Chao was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhenxing Liu (刘振兴)

Liu was a Chinese theoretical physical pioneer, who made a great contribution to China's studies on magnetosphere physics and space exploration. He also made innovative achievements on the frontier of magnetosphere physics. He served as a researcher in China's National Space Science Center of CAS, and a chief scientist of Geospace Double Star Project. He graduated from the Meteorology Department of Nanjing University at 1955. In 1995, in recognition of his achievements, Liu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Rongsheng Wu (伍荣生)

Wu served as a professor of SAS, the honorary director of China Meteorology Society, chairperson of Advisory Committee for Atmospheric Science Education, and the chairperson of mesoscale team of International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics. He has made innovative achievements in atmospheric dynamics. Wu graduated from the Meteorology Department of Nanjing University at 1956. In 1999, in recognition of his achievements, Wu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Lianshou Chen (陈联寿)

Lianshou Chen is a researcher of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, and a Ph.D. supervisor. He served as director of China's National Meteorological Center of CMA, deputy director of technology committee of National Meteorological Center, and director of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. He has been focusing on the research of tropical cyclone. Chen graduated from the Meteorology Department of Nanjing University at 1957. In 1999, in recognition of his achievements, Chen was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Shui Wang (王水)

Shui Wang is a Chinese space physicist, working as a professor and Ph.D. supervisor of University of Science and Technology of China. He served as chairperson of Chinese Geophysical Society, managing director of Chinese Society of Space Research, and the representative of Scientific Committee on Solar Terrestrial Physics of ICSU. Wang graduated from the Meteorology Department of Nanjing University at 1961. In 1993, in recognition of his achievements, Wang was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Congbin Fu (符淙斌)

Congbin Fu is a meteorologist, honorary Ph.D. of the University of Gothenburg, professor of SAS, chairperson of the Institute for Climate and Global Change Research, director of the Scientific Advisory Board of Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center for Climate Change. He worked as chairperson of Pacific Science Association, and vice chairperson of China Association for Science and Technology. He has been focusing on the research of global climate change. Fu graduated from the Meteorology Department of Nanjing University at 1962. In 2003, in recognition of his achievements, Fu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2015, he was elected a foreign academician of Finish Society of Sciences and Letters.

Jianmin Xu (许健民)

Jianmin Xu is an expert in meteorological satellite. He served as director, and later, chief engineer of National Satellite Meteorological Centre, during which time meteorological satellite data played an important role in the monitoring and assessment of natural disasters such as fires and floods, monitoring and assessment of crop growth, and ecological environment, and gained remarkable social benefits. Under his guide, real-time meteorological database was established, thanks to which National Meteorological Center has the ability to analyze tropical weather. Xu attended Nanjing University at 1960, and graduated from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology at 1965. In 1997, in recognition of his achievements, Xu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Guoxiong Wu (吴国雄)

Guoxiong Wu is a professor of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He served as director of State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, chairperson of Chinese Committee of International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences. He has been focusing on the research of atmospheric dynamics, climate dynamics, Atmospheric circulation dynamics, and global climate system model and numerical modeling. He has made systematical and innovative achievements in meteorology and Synoptic meteorology. Wu attended Nanjing University at 1961, and graduated from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology at 1966. In 1997, in recognition of his achievements, Wu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Xiangde Xu (徐祥德)

Xiangde Xu is a professor and Ph.D. supervisor of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. He served as associate director of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. He has been focusing on the research of atmospheric dynamics and applied studies concerning typhoon rainstorm, water circulation of plateau, urban meteorology, and boundary layer theory. Xu attended Nanjing University at 1961, and graduated from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology at 1966. In 2009, in recognition of his achievements, Xu was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Deliang Chen (陈德亮)

Deliang Chen is the August Röhss Chair and dean of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. He is an internationally renowned climatologist and has made prominent contributions in many areas of connections between regional climate and atmospheric circulation, climate dynamics and climate change. He received his bachelor degree of science in Climatology in 1983 from Nanjing University. In 2017, in recognition of his achievements, Dr. Chen was elected a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Zhemin Tan (谈哲敏)

Zhemin Tan is a professor and Ph.D. supervisor of SAS, and the executive vice president of Nanjing University. He has concentrated on atmospheric dynamics, tropical cyclone dynamics and atmospheric predictability. In much of his work, Dr. Tan has consistently bridged theoretical and applied research through a combination of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. He received his B.S. degree, M.S. degree, and Ph.D. degree in Meteorology from Nanjing University. In 2021, in recognition of his achievements, Dr. Tan was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
